Chicken John is running for Mayor of San Francisco!!

Hey all, my friend Chicken John, who taught me how to make a gasifier generator that runs off of burning organic material (like coffee grounds, wood pellets, etc) is running for Mayor. Earlier this year he was generous enough to put on a Lost Film Fest show at his space. If you live in the Bay area please help out. Read on!

p.s. More about the gasifier motor soon that was built with the genius of Hackett + Philly from Madagascar Institute and Josh from Humanistic Robotics. We attempted to use this at Live Earth, but missed the mark, However I’m going to take this on the road later this summer to power a Lost Film Fest tour.

VOTE FOR CHICKEN JOHN RINALDI FOR MAYOR OF SAN FRANCISCO

In 1966, NASA was faced with an interesting problem. They needed a pen that would write in zero gravity. They spent millions of dollars developing a pen that would do just that. A scientific, precision instrument that didn’t need gravity to imprint a glyph on paper.

The Russian space program used a pencil.

When I started talking to people about running for Mayor, I got a lot of hard questions about my experience. I was told that I would not be taken seriously. That I would be viewed as less than qualified. That only a highly sophisticated and expensive tool could possibly get the job done. Untrue. Sometimes you only need a simple tool. People of San Francisco, I am that simple tool.

Relevant experience? I’ve successfully run a touring circus staffed entirely by rebellious youth, which requires exactly the same skill set I’ll need as Mayor when dealing with the Board of Supervisors. Same same. It’s true, I haven’t spent the last 10 years in City Hall. Instead, I’ve bought and maintained a 100-year-old live-work space in San Francisco. I’ve operated (and continue to operate) a small business in this city, going through the crushing trials of navigating city bureaucracies and the permit process in order to make interesting things happen in (what could easily be) the most interesting city in the world. Last summer, I spent a few months building a 110’ raft made of junk propelled by 2 VW engines that sent 35 happy artists down the Mississippi river.

I put on shows of all sizes in all places. I support and advocate art and the championing of the amateur artist, with my mantra of “Art for all purposes.” I helped facilitate the opening of a dozen art spaces. I converted my 1975 GMC pick up truck to run on wood gas (page 66) in a weekend. Made of junk, runs on garbage. Soon to run on coffee grinds: the Café Racer. Alternative energy is easier then it sounds.

Me and my dog have invested all our time, attention & money for a decade to make this city the interesting, whimsical, adventure-filled place I want it to be, and that I know so many people came here to participate in.

Watching it turn into a NIMBY suburb isn’t on the menu. It’s unacceptable. You may agree with me. As Mayor I will protect and promote the superior city that San Francisco can be.

People tell me this is impossible. You can never be mayor without support from the big developers or the city’s richest denizens. But throughout my life I’ve been doing impossible things, and most of them have been fabulously successful. And great fun! From running an amateur punk rock circus to getting Burning Man off the ground as a viable business to running a successful performance venue in San Francisco dedicated to all the arts that no other venue would touch. I am the man who beat City Tow out of 50 million dollars. I got a million stories. I’ll tell ‘em to ya later.
Stay with me, here….

The impossible is what I do, is what I’ve always done. But I can’t vote myself into the Mayor’s office. For that I need you. To the point: 10,000 signatures on old-school sheets of paper that all have to be done exactly right, each with ten totally legitimate names and addresses of bona fide registered voters in San Francisco, the city of Art and Innovation. If one name is wrong, the whole sheet gets thrown out. It’s complicated stuff, this politics. They don’t make it easy to do what I’m doing here. But that’s OK, getting a truck to run on garbage wasn’t easy either. Fighting for 10 years to generate more Units of Interesting in San Francisco wasn’t easy. None of it’s easy. But it all gets done. Of course it does. I’m not fuckin’ around. I’m a 100% guy. If I say I’m gonna do something, that’s exactly what happens. We only have our word. Without it, I am as bad as a politician.

I am not a politician.

But I am man with some idea about how this great city should operate. My platform is heavy on power generation and waste. And of course Innovation & Art. But these are things to roll out later. When I’m a candidate. Right now I need to pull together 10,000 signatures. And I defiantly need help. We have only collected like 2,000. It’s harder than it sounds. I am committing to run: to duel to the death!!! I’d like it if 80 of you could commit to getting 100 signatures by the 25th. Here’s what you do: print 20 copies of these forms ON 10 SHEETS OF PAPER: DOCUMENT 1 ON THE FRONT, DOCUMENT 2 ON THE BACK. Print them out, have registered voters sign them. They can only sign for one candidate per election. Drop me a line and I’ll come to your house and collect them and clean your toilet. We only have 2 weeks. 14 days. Here are the docs:

Here is a link to today’s New York Times article. I talked to this reporter for an hour and forty-five minutes. Told her all my great ideas. A dozen hilarious jokes. This is what the American people got.
Go read it, and see what I’m up against here….

Thanks for your support. There is no reason why we can’t win.

New Manu Chao video directed by Emir Kusturica

Okay, anyone who knows me that Manu Chao is my favorite musician ever. Liz and I even got to hang out with him a little earlier this summer. Tomorrow we’re going to go see him in Philly!! yay!!

Along with that exciting news, Emir Kusturiça is one of my favorite directors ever (dir. Underground, Black Cat White Cat, Time of The Gypsies, and a bunch of others). He just directed the new Manu Chao video clip for “Rainin’ In Paradize,” shot in Buenos Aires. Scroll down for the video.

The new album “La Radiolina” apparently comes out on August 27th, though I’m not sure if that’s the date it comes out in the U.S…however that stuff doesn’t really matter anymore with the web… does it? If anyone has some advance tracks online please email me some links. I’ll love you forever xoxox Scotty

Big thanks to Ken Erlich and The Coup for hooking Liz and I up. I’m especially excited to see the YO! WHAT HAPPENED TO PEACE? book that John Carr and Katharine Kirby curated. John’s helping out at Coachella with the Energy FACTory project. The installation will showcase Wind, Solar, Biodiesel, Ethanol, ManMade and Thermal energy sources… just my cup o tea. At some point I’ll be DJ’ing at the porta-potty DJ booth. If you’re out at Coachella and want to meet up, feel free to text me at 267.258.4195. Liz and I should be running around for the whole weekend frolicking and lamenting the $4 bottles of water.

Jerry Springer Episode debacle..

Okay, so a little while ago someone posted to YouTube the Springer episode I was on with dear old friends Justin Pearson (The Locust, Some Girls, Ground Unicorn Horn, Swing Kids, Struggle, etc), Alysia, and Christine. The Locust are going to be starting a tour to support their new album shortly, so in honor of the tour.. and new beginnings.. Here are the 2 segments we were in. How it happened is a long stupid story, so I’ll post it right here. I’m in the second segment if you want to skip to it.. umm.. yeah.

part 1

part 2

The Whole Idiotic Story

I was in SoCal for a memorial show in 1999 for a friend of mine (Eric Allen from Unbroken/Swing Kids). My ex gf Carissa and I were staying with Justin in San Diego afterwards. I called my voicemail and discovered that my house had been robbed back in Philly, so in order to cheer myself up I made a bunch of prank phone calls. This included one to the Jerry Springer show. I left a voicemail telling them that I was sleeping with Justin, Alysia (his gf), and Christine (his roommate), and i wanted to blow the lid off the whole thing.

The producer called back, and left a message asking for me to call back “anytime”..

While in california, I discovered that a ton of my friends had started getting into the film industry, and on the plane ride home I sat next to then completely unknown actor at the time, Peter Saarsgard (who showed me the script for as yet unmade Boys Don’t Cry). We chatted it up, and by the end of the flight I decided that my new direction was going to be with doing indie films.

I got home to philly, only to discover that my house had been broken into a few more times (with some kids staying there - long story..don’t ask).. and all my stuff was gone, guitars, amps, tools.. whatever.. I was super bummed out.. So, as I sat up late at night I remembered that the producer of the springer show told me to call him back “anytime” and 4am was as good a time as any..
So I woke the producer up, expecting him to be really irritated, but he was thrilled that I called. He was practically yelling in my ear, “CAN YOU FLY TO CHICAGO TOMORROW???!!” and I was like ” uhhhhh”, completely not expecting him to be receptive…

Then the bomb dropped.

He asked me if I was making the story up, and that if I was in fact fibbing, so I thought about it for a moment.. and replied..

“Do you think I would lie to the american public about this serious matter?? Do you think I would expose my personal life to the world all for a prank? a hoax? a sham? I’ve never been so insulted in all my life.. harumph!” or, something ridiculous like that.

So he said.. “okay okay..now we just need to call the others to corroborate the story..”

So I gave him the phone #’s of the other kids…

And immediately I called Justin.

Lost Film Fest roadtrip starts in a few days..

I’m totally excited..why? Steaz Organic Sodas (one of the Lost Film Fest sponsors) is loaning Liz and I a van to take to True/False and SXSW. Not only that, it will be full of Steaz Energy, the first vegan and organic fair-trade energy drink (they use organic cane juice, Yerba Mate, Green Tea, Acai, and Guarana!). It’s pretty ridiculous..yes.. We’re heading out on Thursday first to the True/False Film Fest in Columbia, MO, Then we’re heading south to Austin for SXSW. Lost Film Fest will be doing a big Bike-In-theater Party on Wed, March 14 in East Austin with our friends THAT Damned Band, then a gypsy-punk danceparty afterwards (I’ll be DJ’ing loads of stuff like Gogol Bordello, Goran Bregovic, Fanfare Ciocarlia, Balkan Beatbox, and other nonsense thrown in) Check in the tourdates section for details and all that good stuff.

I’m going to post a list of stuff that we’re going to be checking out at both SXSW, and all the cool stuff peripherally. I’m particularly stoked for HELL ON WHEELS the Texas Rollergirls doc at sxsw. It was directed by Bob Ray + Werner Campbell, both long time friends of Lost Film Fest. Our list of picks will soon follow of the bands and other stuff we’re going to see. I’m particularly interested in seeing what films SXSW has to offer this year, and what kinds of cool new webrelated things I can check out in the SXSW interactive bit (Maybe we’ll get to hang out with the Make Magazine and BoingBoing gangs!!). If you’re going to be in Austin, send me a message on www.myspace.com/lostfilmfest. More than likely I’ll be able to hook you up with the energy drinks for your parties and shows..

LA trip re-cap

What a crazy whirlwind it’s been over the past few weeks. I just got back from Los Angeles where I decided totally last minute to go to the release party for Peter Young. Peter was just released after doing over 2 years in a federal correctional facility for liberating a few thousand mink. I’m pretty thrilled that he’s finally out of prison and able to get on with his life. We’re going to be booking speaking gigs for him soon with Evil Twin Booking. The event took place at our friend Taran’s house (A few years ago Taran came to do a crazy thing at one of our annual Lost Film Fest shindigs.. Taran was on the show Home Improvement, and currently runs a vegan raw food company called Play Food). It was pretty awesome for me to be at the gathering because I got to re-connect with not only Peter and Taran, but other old friends from the hardcore scene like Vic DiCara and Rob Fish from 108.

While in LA I hung out a bunch with John Carr who showed me some of his new artwork, was shown some of the kooky new stuff Andre Hyland and Mike Mayfield are working on, reconnected with friends Marisa and Phil, and hung out with new pals Kay, Jamez, Yosi and Chelsea. Overall a great trip.

I’m going to be returning to LA in a few months to do some Lost Film Fest shows and maybe go to Coachella. woo!

It you’re interested in booking a date for the show, please check out our EVIL TWIN BOOKING AGENCY site for more info.
A little while ago in Germany I was interviewed by Mara Kramer regarding Lost Film Fest. I speak a bit about fair use, the creative commons, and the importance of sharing information. take a peek:

Speaking of Evil Twin Booking, The Printers we used are this really great worker owned business in Camden NJ called Prompt Printing. They’ve printed a ton of publications I like including Slug and Lettuce, and all the issues of Harbinger.
